The Rotten Apple Who Didn't Know His True Purpose In Life

One day, there was a lonely apple tree standing in a vacant field
surrounded by bush, and the soft breeze blew through its branches.

The shiny red apples swayed from side-to-side, as they dangled helplessly from the strong limbs.

A group of farmers arrived with their baskets, and began to pluck the most perfect apples from the tree.

One-by-one, the apples gathered in their respective baskets, and one small apple remained, as all his friends disappeared from his sight.

Just then, a small hand reached up to pick this very apple from the branches...
Abruptly, a stern voice interrupted and stated, "Joey! No! Don't pick that small apple! Can't you see that it's rotten to the core?"

The child crawled back down the ladder in compliance, and they began their ascent back up the field into the distance.  The little apple could see their baskets were brimming to the top with the most prized apples the tree had possessed.

The little rotten apple hung lifelessly and alone, as the sun began to set behind the nearby bushes, and darkness fell.

The little apple began to feel frightened, as he had never spent a night alone in the dark.  His friends were no longer around to keep him company, and to reassure him that nothing bad would happen during nightfall.  He dangled there, feeling very sad and scared, as his skin quivered.

Suddenly, he could hear rustling coming from the bushes!

He was terrified that an angry bear might come along and eat him with his big fangs...
Then he thought back to what that farmer had said about him being, 'rotten to the core'.  He didn't feel rotten...

"Was he really THAT bad?" he pondered.

Then his thoughts began to wonder if it would be good to be eaten by an angry bear, if he was so rotten anyways.  What purpose could he ever serve to humanity, if he was no good...

His feelings were crushed, as he wondered how his life could be important to anyone.

Just then, the rustling in the bushes broke the silence and he began to feel frightened again.

He closed his eyes and believed an awful fate was coming to him.

He felt a nudge... and then another, as the tree began to shake.  The limbs were flailing around and he could feel his stem losing its grip!

"Oh no! What is happening?" exclaimed the little apple.

As his stem broke free from the branch, he began to fall...

He was sure his life was going to end, without fulfilling any purpose to humanity.

Suddenly, he felt a hand grasp his body and he was raised back up into the light of a faint moonbeam.  His body twisted and turned from side to side, and he heard an echo of a voice whispering, "Oh, thank goodness, an apple!  I haven't eaten for days, as I've been lost and couldn't find my way!"

Gradually, a realization swept over the little apple, as he was being devoured by the hungry human...
