One sunny day the breeze was blowing and the tree branches were swaying
from side to side in a majestic fashion.
A leaf was plucked from one of the tall limbs that rose high above the land, and it floated through the air, and made its way to the foot of a small sapling.
The sapling studied the lines in the leaf's palm, and wondered what would happen now, as the leaf was no longer connected to its source of life. He looked up the rugged trunk of the tree next to him, in which the leaf fell, and he decided to question his older neighbour.
The large tree bent down to hear the little sapling, as he was so tall, he could no longer see his roots very well.
The sapling curiously asked, "That leaf that just floated down from the top of one of your limbs will no longer be able to eat." "What will happen to him now?" the little tree sobbed.
The big tree knelt down as best he could and patted the little sapling's top with a leafy branch.
"Do not worry, my child", he said, "the leaf will disintegrate and become a part of the soil."
"Oh no!" exclaimed the little tree. "That is awful!"
The big tree grinned from limb to limb, as he explained, "We all have our purpose here on Earth, little tree, and that leaf has completed its duty. It kept the harsh sun rays off of your buds, and gave you shelter from some of the most torrential rains that could have drown your roots."
"Oh," the little sapling said, as his voice trailed off in wonderment. "I do appreciate that the leaf helped me," stated the tree gratefully.
The big tree chuckled as he rose his branches back up towards the sky and stood with pride as the span of his limbs shaded the little tree.
As the little sapling looked up at the grand stance of his friend, he couldn't wait until he grew strong and mighty. He looked at all the buds that were trying to bloom along his tiny branches, and he thought to himself, "You just wait little bud... someday, you'll be a real leaf!"
